materialm: Enhancement of Industrial Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Andrea Trianni, 2021-02-26 Industrial energy efficiency has been recognized as a major contributor, in the broader set of industrial resources, to improved sustainability and circular economy. Nevertheless, the uptake of energy efficiency measures and practices is still quite low, due to the existence of several barriers. Research has broadly discussed them, together with their drivers. More recently, many researchers have highlighted the existence of several benefits, beyond mere energy savings, stemming from the adoption of such measures, for several stakeholders involved in the value chain of energy efficiency solutions. Nevertheless, a deep understanding of the relationships between the use of the energy resource and other resources in industry, together with the most important factors for the uptake of such measures—also in light of the implications on the industrial operations—is still lacking. However, such understanding could further stimulate the adoption of solutions for improved industrial energy efficiency and sustainability. |
materialm: Linear Optimization for Business Marcos Singer, 2019-03-28 This book takes a unique approach to linear optimization by focusing on the underlying principles and business applications of a topic more often taught from a mathematical and computational perspective. By shifting the perspective away from heavy math, students learn how optimization can be used to drive decision making in real world business settings. The book does not shy away from the theory underlying linear optimization but rather focuses on ensuring students understand the logic without getting caught up in proving theorems. Plenty of examples, applications and case studies are included to help bridge the gap between the theory and the way it plays out in practice. The author has also included several Excel spreadsheets, showing worked-out models of linear optimization that have been used to drive decisions ranging from configuring a police force to purchasing crude oil and media planning. How can the routes and pricing structures of airlines be optimized? How much should be invested in the prevention and punishment of crimes? These are everyday problems that can be solved using linear optimization, and this book shows students just how to do that. It will prove a useful, math-free resource for all students of management science and operations research. |

materialm: Optimization of Integrated Supply Chain Planning under Multiple Uncertainty Juping Shao, Yanan Sun, Bernd Noche, 2015-05-27 The subject of this book is supply chain logistics planning optimization under multiple uncertainties, the key issue in supply chain management. Focusing on the strategic-alliance three-level supply chain, the model of supply chain logistics planning was established in terms of the market prices and the market requirements as random variables of manufactured goods with random expected value programming theory, and the hybrid intelligence algorithm solution model was designed. Aiming at the decentralized control supply chain, in which the nodes were unlimited expansion, the chance-constrained stochastic programming model was created in order to obtain optimal decision-making at a certain confidence level. In addition, the hybrid intelligence algorithm model was designed to solve the problem of supply chain logistics planning with the prices of the raw-materials supply market of the upstream enterprises and the prices of market demand for products of the downstream enterprises as random variables in the supply chain unit. Aimed at the three-stage mixed control supply chain, a logistics planning model was designed using fuzzy random programming theory with customer demand as fuzzy random variables and a hybrid intelligence algorithm solution was created. The research has significance both in theory and practice. Its theoretical significance is that the research can complement and perfect existing supply chain planning in terms of quantification. Its practical significance is that the results will guide companies in supply chain logistics planning in the uncertain environment. |
materialm: Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics II G.S. Dulikravich, Mana Tanaka, 2000-12-11 Inverse Problems are found in many areas of engineering mechanics and there are many successful applications e.g. in non-destructive testing and characterization of material properties by ultrasonic or X-ray techniques, thermography, etc. Generally speaking, inverse problems are concerned with the determination of the input and the characteristics of a system, given certain aspects of its output. Mathematically, such problems are ill-posed and have to be overcome through development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. Following the IUTAM Symposium on these topics, held in May 1992 in Tokyo, another in November 1994 in Paris, and also the more recent ISIP'98 in March 1998 in Nagano, it was concluded that it would be fruitful to gather regularly with researchers and engineers for an exchange of the newest research ideas. The most recent Symposium of this series International Symposium on Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics (ISIP2000) was held in March of 2000 in Nagano, Japan, where recent developments in inverse problems in engineering mechanics and related topics were discussed. The following general areas in inverse problems in engineering mechanics were the subjects of ISIP2000: mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other engineering applications. The papers in these proceedings provide a state-of-the-art review of the research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics and it is hoped that some breakthrough in the research can be made and that technology transfer will be stimulated and accelerated due to their publication. |

materialm: Analysis of the Deformation of Saturated Porous Rocks in Compression Francois Henri Cornet, 1975 An investigation of the mechanical influence of interstitial fluids on the deformation process of saturated rocks has been conducted to determine the domain of validity of previously published theories. Equilibrium equations for fluid saturated materials in which the fluid is at rest or flows according to DARCY's law were derived. For this purpose, a new characterization of porosity has been proposed for analyzing porosity variation within a rock mass. This derivation indicates that the bulk material (solid plus fluid) can be represented by an equivalent homogeneous continuum for which the mass density and the stress tensor at any point depend upon average stresses and average densities of both the solid matrix and the saturating fluid as well as upon the surface and the volume porosity. |

materialm: Intellectual Property Rights in Agricultural Biotechnology Frederic H. Erbisch, Karim M. Maredia, 2004 During the past twenty-five years, biotechnology has revolutionized agricultural research. The enormous potential, together with a landmark decision by the US Supreme Court to allow the patenting of genetically-engineered organisms has encouraged private sector companies to invest in research programmes. This book (first edition in 1998) is now fully revised and updated, with five completely new chapters. It presents definitive information on intellectual property law in a simplified form. |

materialm: Transportation for the Nuclear Industry D.G. Walton, S.M. Blackburn, 2012-12-06 The transport requirements of the nuclear industry are unique in many respects. Thi s is not because cargoes are particularly large or hazardous by compari son wi th other industries but because standards of performance required in every aspect of the activity are so much greater than those required for any other industry. Transport of nuclear materials is subject to existing statutory regulations applied not only nationally but internationally. In addition to this, users of transport demand the highest standards of performance for their own purposes particularly in the area of quality assurance. Similar considerations also apply to the transport of non-nuclear materials where the transport link often has to tie in with project management and quality assurance requirements. Safety and security of nuclear materials are of paramount importance but even when these aspects are of a completely acceptable standard public attitudes to the transport activities have to be addressed adequately. The transport system itself consists of many components. The route, the vehicles, the containers, and the individual packages. The performance of each component determines the performance of the total system: all these factors were presented in the 1988 Conference on Transportation for the Nuclear Industry, giving a broad over-view of current practice together with wide ranging consideration of future requirements and developments. |
materialm: The nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology, Volume II Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Ruixian Fang, 2023-04-26 This text describes a comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology (nth-CASAM), developed by the author, which enablesthe efficient and exact computation of arbitrarily high-order functional derivatives of model responses to model parameters in large-scale systems. The nth-CASAM framework is set in linearly increasing Hilbert spaces, each of state-function-dimensionality, as opposed to exponentially increasing parameter-dimensional spaces, thereby overcoming the so-called “curse of dimensionality” in sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. The nth-CASAM is applicable to any model; the larger the number of model parameters, the more efficient the nth-CASAM becomes for computing arbitrarily high-order response sensitivities. The book will be helpful to those working in the fields of sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, model validation, optimization, data assimilation, model calibration, sensor fusion, reduced-order modelling, inverse problems and predictive modelling. This Volume Two, the second of three, presents the large-scale application of the nth-CASAM to perform a representative fourth-order sensitivity analysis of the Polyethylene-Reflected Plutonium benchmark described in the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. This benchmark is modeled mathematically by the Boltzmann particle transport equation, involving 21,976 imprecisely-known parameters, the numerical solution of which requires representative large-scale computations. The sensitivity analysis presented in this volume is the most comprehensive ever performed in the field of reactor physics and the results presented in this book prove, perhaps counter-intuitively, that many of the 4th-order sensitivities are much larger than the corresponding 3rd-order ones, which are, in turn, much larger than the 2nd-order ones, all of which are much larger than the 1st-order sensitivities. Currently, the nth-CASAM is the only known methodology which enables such large-scale computations of exactly obtained expressions of arbitrarily-high-order response sensitivities. |

In recent years, more and more enterprises world-wide have adopted EIS such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for running their businesses. |
materialm: Materials Kinetics Fundamentals Ryan O'Hayre, 2014-12-03 Introductory kinetics for the undergrad materials scientist Materials Kinetics Fundamentals is an accessible andinteresting introduction to kinetics processes, with a focus onmaterials systems. Designed for the undergraduate student, thisbook avoids intense mathematics to present the theory andapplication of kinetics in a clear, reader-friendly way. Studentsare first introduced to the fundamental concepts of kinetics, withillustrated diagrams, examples, text boxes, and homework questionsthat impart a unified, intuitive understanding. Further chapterscover the application of these concepts in the context of materialsscience, with real-world examples including silicon processing andintegrated circuit fabrication, thin-film deposition, carbon-14dating, steel degassing, energy conversion, and more. Instructormaterials including PowerPoint presentations, a test bank, and moreare available through the companion website, providing a completeresource for the undergraduate materials science student. At its core, kinetics deals with rates, telling us how fastsomething will take place – for example, how fast water willevaporate, or how fast molten silicon will solidify. This book isdesigned to provide students with an introduction to kinetics'underlying principles, without rigorous math to distract fromunderstanding. Understand universally important kinetic concepts likediffusion and reaction rate Model common kinetic processes both quantitatively andqualitatively Learn the mechanisms behind important and interesting materialssystems Examine the behaviors, properties, and interactions of relevantsolid materials There are a large number of books on chemical kinetics, butthere are far fewer that focus on materials kinetics, and virtuallynone that provide an accessible, introductory-level treatment ofthe subject. Materials Kinetics Fundamentals fills thatneed, with clear, detailed explanations of these universalconcepts. |
